about

More tracks to come on this album soon! (I'm new to Bandcamp and published before I was ready!)

Sometime in mid 1986, watching TV with the family at home, Miami Vice came on. My dad pointed at one of the actors and said, "I think that's Miles Davis, the trumpet player“. The man looked weird, almost reptilian to me. A few weeks later I saw the same weird guy interviewed by Jools Holland on channel 4’s live show The Tube. I quickly switched the Betamax to record. The interview was strange. Miles didn’t seem to answer any of the questions in a coherent way, showed some odd artwork of his which was all legs and faces. Then it cut to the video of his new album, Tutu. It was the first time I’d ever seen anything so cool and current with a trumpet in the lead role. I watched the recording over and over. The next day I went out and bought the album, Tutu, from a little record shop in a shabby backstreet of Stockport. They had loads of albums by this guy, so I bought another at the same time. I was 16. (The other record was Miles Davis with Charlie Parker…) Miles Davis’ output from the 80s and 90s era is much maligned, but it was a massive part of my formative years and a huge influence on my life. I formed a six piece band called “The Senate” which was a big hit in Manchester for a few years. In 2017, initially as a way of getting to grips with some new technology and software, I started recording a few tunes harking back to those happy days stomping around the stage of PJ Bells wearing cycling sunglasses and a long coat! The compositions grew beyond that though, and over five interim years they’ve grown into something of their own, I think. Hope you enjoy it!

about

Neil Yates Wales, UK

Trumpeter from UK. I just make music I feel like making these days. I can't stand "the music industry" and avoid it where at all possible. I'll be gradually putting stuff up here from the last couple of decades and a few brand new recordings soon. Hope someone likes it. I play every Monday at a lovely pub in North Wales UK called The Penrhyn Arms. Maybe see you there! N. ... more
